Paradise just had the privilege of hosting a young couple from Switzerland who are traveling north on their 7-month-long honeymoon. Nadine and Philip Lutolf have been experiencing the trip of a lifetime, after their wedding in a quaint village just outside of Zurich last summer. They purchased a custom fitted Land Cruiser, drove it to Germany, and shipped it to Uruguay. From there, they took a ferry to Buenos Aries to begin their trip heading north through Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico and California. Only the youngest and heartiest of souls could not only survive, but thrive through some of their harrowing experiences. In the midst of the unique beauty they discovered in each country, they also shared with us some terrifying times! They endured Nadine’s acute illness and hospitalization in Bolivia, blockades in Columbia where they and other tourists were actually under attack, and lastly a nine-hour ordeal in Tijuana at the border. But nothing, absolutely nothing, could dim their memories of the most majestic site they’ve seen in their lifetime: the Mayan ruins of Tikal, Guatemala. Located deep inside a jungle that extends as far as the eye can see, plazas and pyramids have been discovered that Philip and Nadine describe as utterly breathtaking! We wish them well in their marriage and future travels, and hope they will return to see us here at Paradise by the Sea! For Holly and Biagio Ferrante, who have vacationed at Paradise by the Sea for 16 years, that upgrade came this past year. They special-ordered a 36’ Voltage 3200 Toyhauler 5th wheel that arrived right after Thanksgiving. Definitely something to be thankful for! Holly’s sister Heidi now uses their original trailer for her growing family in the campsite next door (son Wilson is 2). “When our boys were young, the bunk beds in the smaller trailer were fine,” explains Holly. “But now, they’re both six-foot tall! We also knew we wanted a larger rig for when we retire, and figured it would be a good idea to start making payments now while we’re both still working.” Their idea has really paid off, changing their summer vacation experience in a fun new way. “We definitely have a more luxurious vacation experience. The tall ceilings make it a high-profile trailer. We have a queen size bed in the master with plenty of closet space, and the toy hauler has two king beds in the back. We figure it’s perfect for when our sons get married and the whole family vacations together.” The shiny Voltage sleeps 8 adults comfortably, and includes a nice sized kitchen and fridge, which was a big perk for Holly. “I really wanted the double-wide fridge and freezer. That was a big selling point for me.” The Ferrante’s also special ordered real paint and thicker fiberglass, instead of paint designs that are simply decals. “It causes the trailer to weigh more, but it will last longer and weather better,” she explains. A remote controls the double awning, slides, and lights. The back end of the toyhauler is a perfect place for storing bikes and coolers, and serves as a resting spot for their beautiful golden retrievers. “We really wanted to be able to start bringing our dogs with us on vacation, and now we have a place and room for them, which is great because they’re part of the family, says Holly. Amenities in one RV include an electric fireplace and retractable TV. Eric Hartman and his wife Mia moved from Nebraska to a KOA campground in Mystic, Connecticut. It's close to Mia's job as a traveling nurse – and affordable.   "Probably $40,000 to $50,000. Roughly," Eric said of the price of his RV. "You can get your payments down to like $170 a month." With a 10-year bank loan, payments can be under $200 a month. Add the optional cost of a campsite and you can live just about anywhere. And for the millennials now driving RV sales, that's the point. So, I mean we're catching up and we're catching on and I think it's something that's becoming more popular with us," Leonard said.   Manufacturers are doing their best to keep up by providing modern finishes like stainless steel and adding millennial must-haves like solar and Wi-Fi. He proudly drives a Dodge Cummins 6-speed with a gooseneck hitch for his 5th wheel toy hauler. We can say we “knew him when!” It takes a rare breed of athlete to be a successful NFL kicker, and gifted prospect Lloyd Tucker may just have what it takes. The Colorado native is going through the paces this offseason under the tutelage of renowned former NFL kicker Michael Husted (Raiders, Buccaneers, Redskins, Chiefs), and will likely give scouts quite a show on April 19 when they congregate in Southern California for the annual special teams NFL tryout. "I've been working my tail off the past few months, and my coach is happy with where I'm at right now," says Tucker, who has been training in the San Diego area since January. "We've been working 2-3 times per week together, and I'm kicking really well with my new form, regularly kicking 60-yarders." Kicking 60-yarders is nothing new for the raw talent. A late-comer to the game of football, the Roaring Fork High School soccer and track star joined the gridiron squad as a position player. Then one game, with a significant lead, the coach recalled Tucker's soccer background and offered to let him kick off. The football sailed through the end zone, leaving spectators speechless. He soon became the team's first-string kicker, and got a quick two-hour lesson from then Broncos kicker Jason Treadwell on technique. From Gridiron to Powder...and Back Again During fall of his freshman year of college, he walked on at Western State Colorado University, made the team, and then postponed his enrollment to pursue a competitive ski-cross career. "I toured the country on the U.S. Freeride Tour and competed in ski-cross and big mountain, ranking 18th in the nation at one point, and winning the Kirkwood 2005 North American Freeride Championships," he explains. But Tucker continued to feel a tug toward the football field—and returned to Western State as a red shirt sophomore. He beat out the team's kicker, and continued a rotation of football in the fall and ski-cross in the winter. "The skiing really helped maintain my leg strength," he shares. "I ended up competing in the X-Games in 2007 and went on to also compete on the Honda Ski Tour and the Jeep King of the Mountain." Tucker (46) Olympic Dreams In 2008, his strong showing the previous year opened doors to compete in World Cup events, the NorAm, and Europe Cup. His ultimate goal was to make the 2010 USA Olympic Team, but an untimely injury dashed his hopes for Gold. "I crashed and broke my collarbone on January 26, 2009, and recovered to compete again, only to break my other collarbone on January 26, 2010," Tucker says. "I was officially an Olympic alternate that year, and the whole thing was a real bummer." "I decided to go back to football; one, because I missed it, and two, because I was tired of being cold all the time in the snow," he laughs. Tucker’s hobbies read like a hybrid of an X-Games action film and a Clint Eastwood Western. The avid outdoorsman regularly feasts on wild game he hunts in the Colorado range, and has broken many a bone in his wild days as a World Cup ski-cross racer and Desert dirt bike enduro racer. Just this past October, he was riding in the last 20-mile leg of the USRA team racing series (Johnny Rock Classic), when he hit a rock and broke his right fibula. Tucker kept the lead though, riding using only one leg, and crossed the finish line a victor. In addition to the championship, he also earned a few screws and a plate in his leg. Back to the Gridiron Western Colorado State was struggling in the kicking position that year, and gladly welcomed the veteran back to the squad. He ended his junior year of college with a record-breaking 61-yard field goal. For reference, the NFL's current record is 64 yards, nailed by Denver's Matt Prater in December 2013. During his remaining season, he finished breaking all school kicking records, and was named All-Conference. His performance as NCAA DII Player of the Week earned him an appearance at a top bowl game, where he caught the eye of a few scouts. He met current coach Michael Husted, and trained hard to prepare for the 2013 NFL tryout. Four days prior, though, he tore the quad on his kicking leg, and while his place kicks that day were on mark, he didn't have the strength to fully perform kickoffs. A New Year Enter 2014, a fresh start with new goals, a healthy body, an NFL-worthy kicking form, and the perfect easy going personality to handle the mental pressure of blasting a pigskin through the uprights. "As a kicker, you have to be relaxed and focused, but also be strong physically as you prepare to kick. It's definitely 90-percent mental. I mentally go to a place I call 'Lloyd-land' and totally let everything go." And while Tucker may possess the common cool demeanor of a seasoned kicker, his path to the NFL will continue to be fascinating, to say the least. #### NFL QB Jim McMahon Visits Paradise We had a few special visitors at Paradise earlier this week! Super Bowl Champion QB Jim McMahon rolled into the resort in a 40-foot Monaco Knight, along with his wife Laurie and their traveling buddies, NHL hockey star Jeremy Roenick and wife Tracy. The king of the Super Bowl Shuffle, well known for his entertaining personality both on and off the field, played in the NFL for 15 seasons before retiring in 1996. He spends much of his time traveling the country to appear in celebrity golf tournaments, but decided to take a different kind of trip this summer. “We travel SO much by plane, and realize how much time we waste,” shared Laurie. “From checking your bags, getting through security, and flying, you can drive there in a shorter amount of time! We thought it would be a lot of fun to get out on the road and go do different things we’ve never done before. You can go see everything at your leisure. You can wake up when you want to, you go when you want to go. It’s very American! The first-time RVers started out in their hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona, heading west toward San Diego. “We were at a state checkpoint, and the border patrol guy said, ‘Oh my gosh, my two favorite athletes in the whole world—Jim McMahon and Jeremy Roenick,’ she added. “We thought, what are the odds? The road trip has begun. Big Mac driving a big Mac.” Driving the beast has been an adventure in itself! “I’ve had to learn how to keep this big rig in one lane,” said McMahon. “It takes up the whole lane, so I’m constantly looking in the mirrors to make sure I’m not weaving. I was worried about getting into some of these parks with tight corners, but the staff here was really helpful and helped back me in.” Since arriving, McMahon has enjoyed hitting the beach and having friends come visit. “Your beach access is really easy, and everything is so clean," he said. "We really like it. We have friends in La Costa, so our first night here they brought us tacos and guacamole, and we watched TV outside. And now we know for next time we need a little hibachi grill!” From Paradise, the group headed to Camp Pendleton to visit injured soldiers being treated at Wounded Warrior Battalion West. The rest of their road trip includes stops in Santa Barbara, Carmel, Big Sur, Half Moon Bay, Napa, Utah to see friends and family, then St. George and Mesquite, before heading back down to Scottsdale. So does the RV world have a new fan? “Yeah, this could be a yearly thing! Maybe a week or so,” said McMahon. “You get to see whatever you want.
